PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE ACROSS
CSX RR TRACKS AND US 29

The South Fulton CID and City of Fairburn received a RAISE grant to create a safer crossing for pedestrians and transit riders to access their jobs along McClarin and Bohannon Road.

The rapid growth of warehousing and distribution centers in the City of Fairburn has resulted in an influx of workers who ride transit to work. When workers need to access their place of employment located on McClarin, Bohannon Road or Logistics Center Drive from the southbound MARTA bus stop, they must cross US 29. To access either the northbound or southbound MARTA bus stop requires traversing over the CSX railroad tracks. If a train is blocking the tracks, pedestrians will oftentimes crawl through the idle train just to make it to work on time. There is on average 100 pedestrians per day crossing the railroad tracks near Bohannon Road to get to and from work.

The CID and the city of Fairburn have received a federal RAISE grant to design the pedestrian bridge. This project will facilitate pedestrian safety improvements along US 29 and near the intersection of US 29 and Harbor Lake. Project steps include preliminary engineering, project design and permitting, compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), public outreach, and stakeholder coordination. The project will also plan and analyze Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements. Design and planning will begin in early 2025
